Canon EOS 350D Announced

Canon have announced the new Canon EOS 350D camera (preview).

On paper it looks very good, and I’m looking forward to having a play with it. However, it is even smaller than the 300D that it replaces, and I just wonder how well it’s going to handle. My EOS 20D is bigger than both the 300D and 350D, but I still find it too small to hold comfortably. Anyway, as I say, I’m looking forward to having a play with it.

Canon have also announced a new macro lens, the EF-S 60mm F2.8 macro. I was planning on getting a macro lens in the spring, so I’ll have to keep an eye on the reviews for this one.

Were you happy with this lens? I tried this one with my 10D, though only briefly, and thought it seemed solid. All the same, both money and the fact that I have an original EF 100 mm F2.8 macro already are keeping me from purchasing another lens like this. Still, I’d love to have a USM macro!

Do you mean was I happy with the EF-S 60mm F2.8 macro? This wont fit the EOS 10D as it doesn’t support the EF-S lens mount. I’d like to get the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM, but as you say, it’s a tad expensive! Maybe this 60mm lens will be good for handheld macro work - the working distance will be less than the 100mm, and camera shake may be easier to control.

Right you are; it was probably mounted on the demo 20D I had a go with.
I got my EF 100 mm macro on eBay a few years back for quite a discount, being second hand, but it was in perfect condition. I guess few people will be ready to give up the USM version just yet…

You were lucky - I’d love to get my hands on one! I’ve not seen any reviews on the 60mm lens, but if I ever get a chance to play with it I’m sure to post something here :-)

Mmm, it was a miracle no one else placed a bid; bad timing on the part of the seller, though I can’t complain. I do check eBay frequently; if I see another macro in good condition (and god knows I don’t need two) I’ll try to make a point of bringing it to your attention.

I just followed your BritBlog link, by the way, only to find that you’re one of the minds that spawned it - I signed on just last week, though I’ve yet to learn if I’ll be approved or not. It seems a good idea - thanks!
