Canon EOS 5D

So they’ve finally done it: the Canon EOS 5D is announced! On paper this looks like a fantastic camera - the most important thing for me being it has a full frame sensor. This was the thing I was holding out for for ages, but I finally gave in to the urge for a digital camera when I got my EOS 20D. The 20D is also a great camera, but having a full frame DSLR has two advantages:

  1. Your lenses behave as they should without the multiplier effect/crop effect of smaller APS-sized sensors - a real advantage if you like wide angle photography like me, and
  2. You have a larger sized view-finder. I really hate the fact that I can never tell if an image on my 20D is in focus, because the viewfinder image is so small!

Before I got my EOS 20D I used a film-based Canon EOS 5. This was (and still is) a lovely camera, and I was fairly reluctant to stop using it. However, the advantages of digital finally won me over, and I got my current camera.

So will I be getting an EOS 5D when it is out? Well, I’m very tempted, I have to say! However, I think that unless my photography improves a great deal, or unless I start making some money from the hoby, then I can’t really justify the expense just at the moment. Of course if I win the lottery then it will be a different story….

Nice but a bit too rich for my blood. I am still dreaming of owning a 20D and hopefully the price will soften a bit once the 5D is out. Here’s hoping anyway. My 300D cannot keep up (I shoot RAW) and often I have to stop shooting while the buffer clears which means missing some good shots. Maybe the 20D will address this problem well enough and I’ll have to live with the crop factor for another few years.

Well if you are thinking of getting a new camera, I can recomend the E)S 350D - it really blows the socks of the EOS 300D! The 350D is really really quick, and has a good sized buffer too. And for the price you just can’t go wrong ;-)

The 5D certainly has some impressive features, and the lack of a flash is inconsequential, given that I only ever use an external, but for that amount of money, a couple of things could be a little higher spec. And the lack of environmental seals seen in it’s pro brothers is a real shame as these chaps are expected to be more rugged than the lower end cameras. Ah well, lottery..!

I’ve used my 20D in rain and so on so they seem OK in the weather. My main concern is the built-in flash housing, which seems to be the most susceptible bit to water damage. As you say though, the EOS 5D camera body has no flash, so it should be much better than the EOS 20D in this respect.
