Ferns at Friday Street, Surrey

Photo of backlit ferns

Took a trip over to the pond at Friday Street in Surrey. I was hoping to get some pictures of dragon flies and things like that, but they were generally to far away for me to get a good close up. I took the ’scenic’ route back to the car and stumbled across some ferns with the sun behind then. The wind was blowing so I had to use a quick shutter speed — meaning less depth of field than I’d have liked. Still, I quite liked the result.

Nice picture as usual Mark !

I’ve just got my new A610 Powershot so I’m gonna be starting to learn photography. Got any resources you’d recommend I look at as a beginner?

    Cheers Gary!

Good question about photography resources. I suppose there are two (perhaps three) areas you need to think about:

    1) Technique (like exposure, what the aperture/shutter do etc.) Loads of stuff out there, for example this. It seems a bit old fashioned, but is quite relevant for digital compacts today (with the exception of the camera shake topic). Quite a good article actually.

    2) Composition (all the arty stuff about what makes a ‘good’ picture) - see rule of thirds

    3) Possibly digital techniques (how to post-process images on your computer). This is a great site - look at the Putting it all together section.

It’s hard to list web sites - there are just loads out there. I’ve always preferred to read a books on this stuff anyway ;-)

Still, photo.net may be another good start. There is a lot of information there too, but it may take a while to get through. I think you can get a lot from sites like flickr too - a lot of people are happy to discuss their technique when asked, and it’s a great place to just browse photos and see what sort of thing you like.

The most important thing is just to have fun though - and don’t be afraid to experiment. After all, you can always hit delete ;-) Hope that helps!
