Mmmm, tasty!

I’ve finally gone all del.icio.us. That is to say I’ve started using the del.icio.us service, which is a rather cunning bookmarking service. The tagging feature is actually more useful than you may expect it to be, and it’s good to be able to look at what other people have bookmarked related to your own ones.

Ferns at Friday Street, Surrey

Photo of backlit ferns
IMG_0957, uploaded by Mark Sweeting.

Took a trip over to the pond at Friday Street in Surrey. I was hoping to get some pictures of dragon flies and things like that, but they were generally to far away for me to get a good close up. I took the ’scenic’ route back to the car and stumbled across some ferns with the sun behind then. The wind was blowing so I had to use a quick shutter speed — meaning less depth of field than I’d have liked. Still, I quite liked the result.

Burn me up, baby!

While I’m in the mood for change I’ve decided to move my feeds over to FeedBurner.
If you subscribe to my feeds, it would be pretty cool if you could switch over to these ones:

Posts feed:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/marksw

Comments feed:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/markswcomments

I say these are RSS feeds, but FeedBurner do something called SmartFeed, which “translates your feed on-the-fly into a format (RSS or Atom) compatible with your visitors’ feed reader application“. Not sure how good or bad this is, but I may as well give it a whizz.

Update

Turns out you can also ’splice’ your Flickr feed into your blog feed, so I’ll give that a bash too. If it all works nicely, I’ll probably move BritBlog over to this - would certainly be interesting to know how many subscribers there are to that feed…

Finally upgraded!

I finally got around to upgrading my Wordpress installation from 1.5.0 to 2.0.3. I upgraded BritBlog ages ago but never managed to get around to this one. Seeing as I’m off work ill today (and my Sky is broken so I can’t watch Big Brother :-( ), I’ve taken the plunge. I do like this new version, and the Akismet plugin is fantastic! I also installed the SimpleTags plugin, which is very neat, the Sociable plugin for social bookmarking, and am currently using a rather modified TypoXP theme.

If you spot anything broken, please do let me know!

William Blake - Auguries of Innocence

Probably a bit of a copyright infringement, but I just heard this on the TV so thought I’d share it with you.

Auguries of Innocence
William Blake

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

The good life: Denbies Vineyard

Although working in the middle of nowhere can be a bit quiet at times, it does give me some great opportunities. How many people can walk to a vineyard in their lunch break, have a nice cold glass of wine, then get back to the office in the space of an hour?!

For those that don’t know, Denbies is the largest vineyard in the UK, and they make some jolly nice wine!

Flight of the bumble bee

IMG_0467, uploaded by marky moo.

Just took a rather unimpressive photo of some lavender with a bee on it, when the bee decided to take off. Managed to take another snap, and although the composition isn’t great I was quite pleased to get the bee in mid-air! It’s almost in focu too :-)

Dead snake

Found this snake stuck in a fence today. Looks like it had eaten something, and while trying to escape into the field got wedged in the fence and died. That’s a bit daft isn’t it?!
