I've been on the lookout for a new DSLR for a while and I was just about to buy one, knowing that Photokina was coming along and would make whatever I bought old.

I eventually bought the new D80, which is not too big for a DSLR and I am enjoying it a lot. I think that the camera bodies have to be relativly big to balance the lenses. They normally use less power than the compacts as they're not driving the display as much of the time.

Have you seen the new Canon Ixus with Image stabiliser and a wide angle lens (28-105 equiv). Very tempting... dpreview.com has details.

I'm just trying out your flickrviewer app. Great work. Wish I had the knowhow to program these things from scratch.

This is a good question David - I'd much rather a smaller DSLR. Even my 20D feels bulky - though having said that the 350D is pretty small.

However, there is a lot of electronics to get into the body, along with larger batteries, memory card reader, lots more buttons and switches etc.

Compact digicams have lower power requirements to DSLRs too, which is one of the reasons they can be smaller - they can use smaller batteries.

Anyway, will be interesting to see what comes out later this month...

Why? why? why? do DSLR cameras have to be so large! Surely can't be the size of the chip, my old Olympus OM1 effectively had a 35mm chip. Yes I know there has to be space for the electronics but the 35mm film cameras needed space for the exposed and unexposed film, plenty of unused space there. The manufacturers manage to get the electronics in compact cameras like the Sony T9 (and an internal zoom lens). So come on manufacturers, what about it?
