Ah, that's a good point....

I used to walk a mile or so to school when I was younger -- it was great fun (especially in concor season and the snow).

After that it was the bus and/or train. The journey was the best part of the day normally: I can't understand why kids want to go in the car these days!

The school's about 15m away so i'd be a bit silly to drive! It would probably take longer to get the car out of the drive on to the road than it does to walk!

Hehhe, I don't think we'll ever see eye to eye on the car front mate! Having said that, sounds like you have a better excuse than most of the people 'round here. The traffic is a nightmare at the best of times without all these twits clogging up the roads.

I think the fairest tax is based on mileage, though larger and heavier vehicles should be taxed more as they (a) cause more congestion, and (b) have a greater impact on the environment and roads.

Glad to hear you walk your son to school -- that's got to be far more fun than driving!

p.s. No comment...

I'm glad I don't live round your area, Mark, I have a Freelander and had a Focus Estate prior to that :)

But all is not so bad, I walk my son to school.

My excuse for having one is I drive across a moor over the Pennines (on a road) to get to the office, and it's treacherous when the bad weather kicks in.

I don't agree that the taxes are fair. Middle managers/salespeople with their bmws and mid-range saloons thundering up and down the motorways on a daily basis are a bigger cause of pollution.
