The Modern Antiquarian

Just stumbled across The Modern Antiquarian - looks like quite an interesting site!

Poor me III

OK, maybe not ‘poor me’ any more; I’ve finally feeling much better. I don’t normally take pills and things when I’m ill, but I’ve found that paracetamol has helped wonders.

Anyway, just logged in to mention a blog I’ve just come across: Holizz versus the web. I’ve not had a chance to read much if it, but the design concept is very good! Made me laugh, anyway ;-)

Update: Hmm, Holizz seems to have changed his design. It’s no longer funny :-(

Gravatar

Another neat idea, which I heard of over at PerlWorld, is Gravatar. It has to be said, it’s pretty simple, but it works just fine! Why can I never have these great ideas? It’s like ping-o-matic - another simple but really efective service!

I’m going to implement it here when I get around to it, but there are loads of things I need to do first with the site.

Need to come up with a cunning idea myself now too…

Are we there yet?

More quality software from Microsoft…

Classic!

Sorry for the lack of bloggage - been a very busy couple of weeks :-(

I finally had a chance at the weekend to start on my new mp3 download web site :) Not quite finished yet, and I need to find partners who can actually supply legal MP3s for download, but at last I have the framework together.

Went down to Dartmoor the previous weekend, and got totally soaked on Saturday. It took three days for my coat to dry out, and it smells even worse now… Took no photos whatsoever. Could barely feel my face it was so numb, let alone move my fingers. Still, I discovered that my old camera case is basically waterproof, so thats a good thing.

The whip is cracking - got to get back to work :(

Playing with my thing

It’s been nice to have a bit of a break over the hols. I’ve been playing with my new camera (EOS 20D) a bit, and am begining to find my way around it a bit more now. Digital is quite different to analogue (film) photography, and it’s interesting to learn new stuff.

The forums at DPReview have been interesting, but I get tired of people bitching about which cameras are better - Nikon or Canon.

Anyway, I read most of the manual when I got the camera, but now I’m a bit more familiar with the body, I’ve been going to bed and re-reading a few pages from it with the thing in my hand (the camera, that is) so I can work out what the manual is going on about.

Found a good article on the microsoft site (believe it or not) on image sharpening. It was written by quite a well respected chap actually, and looking through the other articles on the site I can see several more that are worth reading.

I think I need to get a new flash gun too. My old speedlite 200e doesn’t work with my EOS 20D, so I think that I will get a Metz 54 MZ-4. It seems fairly simple to use (only has two buttons :-) ), and people report good things about it. I was planning on the Canon Speedlite 580EX, but this sounds to be rather unreliable.

Anyway, I’m getting happier with my new camera, so that’s good. It would have been a hell of an expensive brick otherwise! I have to think about getting a macro lens now the spring is on it’s way (it will be the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM), and I rather fancy the Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX to go with it!

Right, too much camera chat - time for an early night!

Christmas Presents

It’s seems to be that time of year again :-( It has to be said, I’m not a major fan of Christmas or New Year and I’m glad when it’s all over. Bah humbug.

Alas it’s hard to escape from, so you have to try and make the most of it. So right now I’m trying to choose presents for my family. It would be good to get them ordered (don’t you love the internet?!) before the end of next week, but it’s pretty hard choosing stuff for some of the family. Does anyone know good places for inspiration? So far I’ve got the following sites:

Anyone know anywhere else that’s good for inspiration?

On a totally different note, while browsing perlworld I found a link to Ian’s Shoelace Site (!) Now, before you dismiss it entirely, go and have a look! I have to say, I found the Shoe Lacing Methods page very interesting. No, really I did!

Related Link: Cool stuff… gadgets and gizmos make great gifts! Check out House of Cool.

New additions

Two new sites added to my links thinggie. Not a new blog, but I’m glad to see that Gibster is back from his fishing trip. Perlworld looks like it may be interesting too - if you’re a bit of a geek ;-)

OK, getting a bit sad now….

.. or did that happen years ago? Perhaps.

Anyway, my new telephone came this afternoon, so for a bit of light relief I’ve been playing with the Sony Ericsson theme generator. So here are the results of my labour:

(You can get the theme here if you really want it!)

I was inspired by forgetfoo, who uses the picture as a wallpaper for his ‘FooDesktop’. Anyway, after a quick search of Google I found the original and tweaked it for use on my own desktop.

So there you have it: matching computer and phone desktops. Is that sad? (Don’t answer that please…)

Right, I think I’m going to prepare my dinner (casserole) now, so that it’s ready for when I’m hungry instead of the usual 10:30 PM…
